This breed originated as a livestock dog in the Canary Islands. Its task was to herd cattle and pigs, and it would chase off or kill predatory dogs to protect its herd. It is a powerful animal. As a cautionary tale, in 2006, two Presas killed a woman in San Francisco because the owner could not control the dog, according to VetStreet.
