This breed originated as a livestock dog in the Canary Islands. Its task was to herd cattle and pigs, and it would chase off or kill predatory dogs to protect its herd. It is a powerful animal. As a cautionary tale, in 2006, two Presas killed a woman in San Francisco because the owner could not control the dog, according to VetStreet. Initial training and socialization classes are mandatory. Training must continue, and the dog must "work" for anything it gets its hands on, including treats and toys, by carrying out commands.
