28. German Shepherd

German Shepherds, the leading breed of K-9 patrol dogs, are known to be intelligent and obedient. However, VetStreet has some advice for you. "There is very little they can't do with proper training, but that's why they're not suitable for beginners. This dog is not recommended for first-time owners, and obedience training should start at an early age.
This breed was developed in Germany in 1899 to herd livestock (mainly sheep). Soldiers returning from World War II brought German Shepherds home, and their beloved dog, Rin Tin Tin, became the first movie star dog. Although they were trained as herding dogs, it's also true that they were trained as versatile dogs. They are working dogs that like to have a job to do. They excel as rescue dogs, guide dogs, and police dogs, and they also excel in dog sports. And don't forget, German Shepherds need a lot of exercise!
